Jul 17 2008 - Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood Fill the Wisconsin Air With Country Music
Posted by Mandy | 0 Comments
There must have been some mistake. Clearly, Taylor Swift should have been the headliner at Country Thunder USA's opening night. And yet Carrie Underwood somehow ended up on stage at the end of the night instead.

It's not that Underwood can't sing, perform or attract an audience. Those facts are undeniable. But Swift was, by far, the Wisconsin festival's main attraction Wednesday (July 16). She owned the stage, the crowd and the entire sundown performance. And in her typical fan-appreciation mode, she stayed past closing time to sign autographs for the hundreds of fans willing to miss Underwood to wait in line to meet Swift.

But for those who stayed in their seats and/or lawn chairs to watch Underwood's set, she certainly gave them plenty to listen to. Her set was just over an hour, but that was time enough to check off almost all of her radio hits. Clad in a short satin jumpsuit and thigh-high black boots, she opened with two rockers, "Flat on the Floor" and "Wasted," and went on to pick up an electric guitar to accompany herself on "Get Out of This Town." If those elements didn't feel very country, she did give the fans little glimpses of that girl from Checotah, Okla. Like when she introduced "The More Boys I Meet" by telling the crowd, "If you can't find Mr. Right, do what I did and get yourself a cute little puppy."

"Jesus Take the Wheel," "Don't Forget to Remember Me" and even her newest single "Last Name" all turned into fan singalongs before she ended her show with "Before He Cheats."

Swift had a few singalongs of her own during her 90-minute set. But it was her spontaneity and enthusiasm that fueled her energetic show. What Swift lacks in years she makes up for with her crowd rapport. And her distinctive voice that has been vaguely criticized by some in the music industry only seems to be getting better with time.

Dressed simply in a black glitter tank dress and cowboys boots, Swift's only rock 'n' roll moment of the night might've been her blinged-out acoustic guitar. She played it throughout the night, putting it down a few times to work the catwalk or let her six-man band shine. At one point during the feisty "Should've Said No," Swift and her fiddle player exchanged their strings for drumsticks and beat the hell out of a trash can as a sort of percussive anger management.

The sincere stories she tells about each song remind you just how young she is, but even young girls can have deep raw emotions. Musing about the song, "The Outside," she said, "I wrote this one at a time in my life when I didn't get to look out and see all your beautiful faces. I wrote this about being lonely, and I don't feel lonely anymore."

A new trend in country seems to be trading in old, tired covers of the most obvious Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard songs and upping the cool quotient with rock and R&B covers. To that end, Swift did an acoustic take on Rihanna's melodic "Take a Bow." She also treated the audience to one new song, "Change," which has an anthem feel to it -- which may be why it was chosen to be part of this year's Olympics broadcast.

Jul 16 2008 - Taylor Swift's Special New Release Out Today
Posted by Mandy | 0 Comments
Taylor Swift’s latest album release takes place today, but it’s not the 18-year old’s highly anticipated sophomore album hitting shelves. Instead, Wal Mart will release a limited edition CD/DVD combination entitled Beautiful Eyes.

“I've gotten so many emails from people asking for new songs,” Swift said. “I thought this might tie them over till the new album comes out in the fall.”

The CD will have six tracks. It will feature two new songs, “I Heart?” and “Beautiful Eyes,” as well as new versions of some of Taylor’s hit singles.

The DVD part of the combo includes all of her videos, her performance of “Should’ve Said No” at the 2008 ACM Awards and a video for “Beautiful Eyes” with clips from Swift's 18th birthday party.

Jul 02 2008 - Taylor Swift and Def Leppard to team up on 'Crossroads'
Posted by Mandy | 0 Comments
Fun fact: Country startlet Taylor Swift was a ripe negative 2 years old when pop-metal mavens Def Leppard released their massively successful, career-defining Hysteria album. Reason for that fun fact: The tender young singer will be joining the weathered radio-rock icons in October for a taping of CMT's Crossroads, which'll premiere Nov. 8 on the network.

According to both parties, the pairing is nonstop good times -- for starters, Def Lep, says a release, is Swift's "all-time favorite rock band."

"Every time I’ve seen Crossroads on CMT I’ve always thought, 'If I ever get to do one of those, it has to be with Def Leppard,' so this is really a dream come true for me,” Swift said in a statement. “I have been screaming the words to Def Leppard songs for years... so it's amazing that I'm going to get to share a stage with them this year."

Def Leppard voice Joe Elliott, who's been screaming the words to those songs for a few years himself, was similarly pumped.

"How cool is this?! Country's hottest young star wanting to work with us!!" he said.

The British loud-rock mainstays have had other recent brushes with hot country stars -- "Nine Lives," the first single from Def Leppard's new Songs From The Sparkle Lounge, is a pair-up with slightly more seasoned country voice Tim McGraw.

Jun 25 2008 - Faith Hill Looks Over Her Shoulder
Posted by Mandy | 0 Comments
Faith Hill has been one of country music’s top female vocalists for years, but she still feels like she needs to prove herself.

That’s been heightened in the last year or two by the influx of new female stars, particularly Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, who’ve both had multi-platinum successes and found themselves on some of the same lists — such as People magazine’s Most Beautiful People — that have frequently highlighted Faith.

She feels the competition, and she says she welcomes it.

"I'm still working towards finding what it is that really makes me feel like I've arrived," Faith told Dial-Global. "I've not found that yet. It's always inspiring — just like a piece of art that you see on a wall — I get inspired by that. I get inspired by everything I see. I loved Carrie Underwood's performance on the ACMs. I thought she was spunky and on fire, and then when Taylor Swift came out and ripped that suit off and the rain came down, I'm like, 'Whoooooo, that was awesome,' because it's true, you know. You want to see something fresh and different and exciting. You've got to keep people's interest up. And I applaud them for that. I really do."

Faith’s interests of late include a Christmas album. Joy To The World will be released Sept. 16.
